I have a 98 Escort that is overheating. It only seams to be doing this because the fan will not always come on. As long a the fan motor kicks on it is fine, the problem seems to be that the fan will not always come on when it needs to. The first indication was that the AC would start blowing hot, which also lead me to the fan. I have tested the fan motor twice and it works with direct power. I have also replaced the temp sensor.

Is there some sort of wiring short that could cause this or a computer malfunction?

It seems to be random. It was doing fine all week until yesterday, then the fan did not come on and it started to overheat again unless I was driving non-stop on the highway.

If the ac is turned on the fan will come on sometimes and it will be ok but this AM I was testing it out, drove around some and was not overheating. I then turned on the ac and was OK also. Then went to the house and turned off the ac and checked the fan it was not on and it started getting hot idleing then I turned the ac back on to see if the fan would come, it didn't so then the temp started shooting up.

Could a bad thermostat cause the fan not to come on properly?

No, the fan should come in at about 95 whether the 'stat is faulty or not. Possible cooling fan relay on this- it should be on the engine bulkhead.

Are you referring to the Constant Control Relay Module?

Where do you think it is located?
