I was driving a few days ago and was putting the window up when I heard a semi-loud clang inside my driver side door. After that, the window would not go up or down and as I finished driving home the window just gradually sank inside the door.

Later that night I decided to remove the door panel and lift the window up and right now have it taped to the door. I was wondering if someone could tell me exactly how the automatic windows work to see if I could troubleshoot my problem.

I'm assuming that the motor burnt out but I want to be sure before I start trying to remove the plastic trim and stuff. The passenger and rear windows work fine, but when I try to raise or lower the driver side window I don't hear the motor even trying to operate. As I said, i'm assuming it's the motor but I don't know exactly how the automatic window operates.(maybe a part that does the raising/lowering broke off, etc)

I am relatively new to self auto repair so I'm trying to learn as I go along and would love to be able to fix this problem myself without the need of having to pay a mechanic.

It's more likely the window regulator itself. Listen closely when you press the switch and see if you can hear the motor run. If you want to do your own repais, get a manual for your car to refer to. You can still ask questions here but with the manual, we won't have to go into every detail. Not in this situation but it will help to see what has to be done to get closer to what we mention. Your local library might have one too. The manual will help you remove the door panel, which will have to be done in this situation. There's nothing wrong with wanting to fix what ever you can.
