I have a 1999 Escort sedan, with the lower end 2.0L I4, and I'm having issues with the water temperature gauge and/or sensor. It wasn't working for a while there, and now that I've replaced the sensor with another used one from another Escort, it works sporadically. Is this something I should replace with a new one?

Also, I now have some SERIOUS rust damage to the left rear quarter underneath the gas door, from what looks like the seal around the gas inlet crapping out. Is this a common problem on Escorts? Should my sister ('99 Escort wagon) and my dad ('99 Escort sedan also) be worried about this too?

P.S.: Forgive my rather lacking post count...I lost track of the forums for a few years after I first found it.

It may just be a connection to the switch. Try putting some dielectric grease on the pin or pins to see if that helps.

I'm not sure about the rust since we don't have rust on our cars here.. But your mention of the rust means the connections can be faulty.
