Question Broken Rear Coil Springs on 97 Escort

Hi. I'm a newbie to the forum and have just been searching for some clues to my current problem with my 97 Escort. I've been told that the rear coil springs are broken; they have not yet popped out to slash my tires, but thye could. A little research tells me that it is a common problem with Taurus, Escort, and other Fords.

I'm no mechanic, but I hate to fork over almost $450 ($260 labour PLUS parts & tax) if it's something I can do myself. Anyone tried it? Anyone have advice? Or pictures?!

Re: Broken Rear Coil Springs on 97 Escort

I have done that job before. Broken springs are common on Escort.

You can access the upper mounts from in the trunk or hatch when you remove the panels. The lower part is pretty much self-explantory when you get the wheels off.

After removing the strut/spring assy, you can change the springs and I suggest upper mounts also. You do not need a spring compressor, just a strong buddy to force down while you remove the nut and assemble it.

You can also purchase complete units that include strut and all. Makes the job even easier and it's probably due for struts anyway.

Thanks, JM. It's good to hear from someone who has done it before. I'll let you know how it goes...hopefully this weekend.
