My 98 2.0 Escort has 237,000 miles on it. Original auto trans and engine, I am experiencing a knocking noise coming from the drive train or trans. I can feel it through the gas pedal and the floorboard.

Does the noise happen while running at idle in park or only when moving?

It usually does this when traveling at speeds 30 and above, it seems to be getting worse. I checked the CV boots they look new,dry and no cracks. I tried to move the half shafts as one would check a worn out Driveshaft, they are tight with no movement. Could it still be the half shafts or in the Trans. Every 30,000 miles I change the trans filter and fluid. Maybe it is time for some repairs.

I have a 99 Escort, and I had a knocking problem that kept getting worse too. Though I have not fixed it yet, I did take it in to my mechanic to find out what was wrong with the car (trying to sell it), and he said it was a crack in the flywheel and I would need to replace the flywheel and torque converter.
Although my car is actually worse while idling, and usually improves once I get past 20-30 MPH, so might not be the same thing, but could be worth checking out maybe. According to the mechanic who found this, it's not a common problem, though caused by wear and tear - he's been in business for 15 years and said he's only ever worked on three cars with this problem, so...
