Clicking in motor 95 escort

Ok looking at picking up a 95 escort. 1.9 with 300k on it, gonna buy it for the wife to beat around town, I know the lady that owns it, it has been driven daily on the freeway around 100 or so miles all the miles on it are high way, its been well taken care of and looks great. Anyhow it has a loud clicking sound comming from the drive belt side of the motor, doesn't sound internal. Mechanic told her it was the watter pump, but sounds more to me like maybe the timing belt tensioner, it this a spring loaded type that might cause the click? either way, not a big fix just wondering if any of you have had this problem in the past. I saw the other forum on a click and its not an injector, its a lil louder, but its not a knock, or internal. THANKS!!!
