Clutch Adjustment

I have a MK1 escort with a 2ltr in it and have driven it for the first time and found the clutch to be not adjusted properly. When taking of the car starts to move when the clutch has been released very slightly and the clutch pedal only goes down a small amount. I have read that a spacer is needed but where does it go (between the adjusting nuts and the hole in the gearbox for the cable seems the most likely spot is this it)?

Re: Clutch Adjustment

Not sure of any spacers, I'd be checking to see if the cable was adjusted correctly, sounds like it's set too slack, have a look at the g/box end, if you've got a lot of threads protruding through the far side of the bell-housing, you'll need to undo the lock-nut and tighten the adjuster nut a few turns, re-try and re-adjust as nec.

Re: Clutch Adjustment

All the mk1 escorts I've driven have had very little clutch travel. Seems to be normal I'd guess. I found it quite fun having such a small distance in the clutch pedal.

I'm assuming here you've got a 2L plus 4sp out of a MKII Escort. So you will have the gearbox with the bellhousing you can unbolt rather than the all-in-one type originally found in MKI's.
Did the gearbox originally come from a 2L or 1600?
For 2L's, there is a small steel block which sits under the pivot bolt where the clutch fork sits and provides its location. Its about 12mm thick and gives you extra leaverage which is required for 2L's. This is because in 2L clutches the nose on the clutch plate sits towards the flywheel side. The pressure plate is shallower so the whole assembly is not as deep as say a 1600.
So the upshot of all this is if you have a gearbox originally from a 1600, the clutch fork will sit directly up against the bellhousing at the pivot point with the locating screw through the middle. An original 2L will have the steel spacer underneath this locating point.
So as I asked before, was the gearbox from a 1600 or 2L. Even if from a 2L, did it have the little steel spacer under the clutch fork? If not, you'll have to pull it out and put one in in order to get correct clutch adjustment.
Hope that helps.
