Cooling fan doesn't work. PLEASE HELP!!!

My wife has a 99 escort, and the temp gauge is redlined, and the cooling fan won't work. I have manually hooked the fan to the battery and it works. I have replaced the coolant temp switch and there is still no difference(I manually jumped the sensor and still nothing).

At this point I suspected the constant control relay module, but took it to Midas for inspection before buying one. They agreed that this was my problem, but after I left the car with them my gas guade is now redlining too. So I got a new constant control relay module from the dealer ($250!) but still have the same problem.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm at a loss at this point. All I can think is to maybe replace the computer, but don't know where it is located.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it is a 2 L SOHC manual tranny model. And it is the regular model, not the ZX2

Re: Cooling fan doesn't work. PLEASE HELP!!!

I was looking under the battery tray where I noticed 2 ground wires that were dangeling. I cleaned them up and re-grounded them and my guages work again, and the fan is working, but only when the A/C is on.

Is this a 2 speed fan that is maybe only working on one speed? Or am I missing something else here?

If the a/c is on, the fan should come on. With a/c off, the fan should only run when the engine gets to a certain temp.

My problem is that it is not. I know that it shouldn't necessarily be running without the ac on when I first turn the car on. But it only runs w/ the A/C on.

Typically cooling fans come in at 90-110 deg. C so maybe you just haven't got it hot enough yet.

NO. It's 100 degrees outside, and I ran the motor for about 45 minutes and still got nothing unless the A/C was on.

I had the same problem(escort 1991), changed everything but nothing happened. I think your thermostat kicks on at a higher temp that suposed to. I changed mine and now is working. It doesnt turn on allways but only when the gauge goes to the max(red). It is better than nothing.

Re: Cooling fan doesn't work. PLEASE HELP!!!

The fan will come on at 214 degrees F. or close to that otherwise it comes on with the ac.Unplug the sensor and the fan should come on.You really need to moniter the pids to see what ect is reading
