confused ECU location

This may sound novice..but it is. We want to know exactly where the ECU is located. Our manual does not tell us, of course, how to take the computer out of the car and the shop determined that was the problem with our 97 escort wagon. They were willing to replace it for the low low price of $600.00 (plus the $200 we already spent finding out what the problem was)...so we decided to do it ourselves. The dash is torn apart..and we think we are there..but without knowing for sure what it looks like and where it's at..we are trying to be cautious. As of today, we are under the dash, looking for a square-ish silver shaped item.
Thanks

Re: ECU location

Not sure if this will help.
On the falcons it is under the left hand side front passenger kick panel.
