i have a 91 escort with two problems....first, it wont run unless i unplug the plug on top of the air filter box. is this sensor the dead one, or something else?
and can it pass a test with it unplugged? smells pretty rich, but runs smooth.
second, it has a serious problem that i am callling blowby, but may be something else. there is a lot of smoke and oil coming out the top hose from the valve cover to the air filter box. if i dont contain the oil coming thru the hose, it fills the box with oil, and saturates the air filter...i ran the hose to a containment bottle, but it now smokes under the hood...is there a test or fix, or is this just a toasted engine? runs great and has no problem going over mountain passes, getting great gas mileage too....if only i could route the smoke into the air filter, and separate the oil...bottom line, i need to get this to pass an emissions test so i can change the title, and perhaps sell it later. any help would be greatly appreciated....

Are you saying the oil is going into the intake or what are you saying. You need to see a mechanic to look at it.

oily smoke pumps out thru the valve cover hose that goes into the air cleaner box to recirculate it...however, its so oily it saturates the filter, and collects in the bottom of the air cleaner box... thus i have rigged what i call an o.c.s., or oil containment system... really its just the hose stuck into an empty oil bottle....it collects about a half quart every few days.....the pcv works fine, and there isnt alot of excess exhaust pressure there......just on top....multiple theories have been sent my way....plugged catalytic, stuck exhaust valve, exhausted engine causing blow by, etc....just want to test to find which one....i cant get it licenced until it passes an emisson test, but it smells so lame, i know it wont....i might add that the engine wont run if i dont unplug the map sensor plug....what about the troubleshooting codes? how do i read them to diagnose things? i know its something simple, cause it runs real good otherwise....thanks for any input!

I have the same. form the pressure hoses from a cylinder head cover to an air filter compartment i found lot of oil. In effect i must replace air filter. Resolution, after compression measurement is place a part of clean sponge behid filter. Oil leaks are caused by higher pressure of air. Oil is pumped to the air intake by higher pressure. Sponge will stop this. But it must be placed to cover holes behind filter, after filter not, because you can find that one in throttle body...when check engine is blinking and totally power leak.
