Greetings,

I wonder if anyone can shed any light or help. I have a Ford Escort 1.6 si N reg 1996 and I have a problem with it "juddering". This is a random problem and can happen every day or not happen for weeks. When it "judders" it looses power and am unable to accelerate, by flooring the clutch and reving it, it seems to sort itself out and am able to continue with my journey.

When this first happened, I noticed "junk" coming out of the exhaust so I had the back box replaced, this then seemed to work fine, no problems for a few weeks or so. The problem then continued. This then followed by changing the spark plugs, again a few days with no problems. In between all this, I started to used Red Ex or other injector cleaners. About this time, I noticed a leak in my petrol tank and realised the tank was very rusty. Thinking that this could be the end of the problems - tank not pressured so fuel starvation or rust in tank, clogs up, loss of power. The tank was changed and again no problems for 5 days but then they started again.

I am not at a loss of what to do next and what could be the cause of this, any help?

Possibly the cat is breaking up and blocking parts of the exhaust intermittently. If the cat is hit when cold you can normally hear the broken honeycomb inside rattling.
