Escort 1.4LX fuel sensor problem...I think!

Hi all,

I have a 1.4LX Escort which recently developed a bit of a problem. It started running very rough, very spluttery with a lot of black (not blue) smoke coming from exhaust. I'm convinced its a fuel related sensor problem but before I go replaging them all I'd appreciate some opinions.

Firstly, before the car started to run rough it seemed to be quite sore on fuel. I did a few minor tests, detatched the oxygen sensor (I think! it's by the exhaust) and there was no change in the sound of the engine. The car is also difficult to start when I detatch the injector the engine will fire for a second or two, then I reconnect the injector and the car will start. Is it flooding, perhaps?

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Sorted it! Sensor was fine, a faulty hydraulic tappet was the problem. There was a hole in the bottom of tappet.
