Escort engine conversion

I've blown my escorts ol' 1100 and I'm after suggestions for a new motor. I live in NZ, so the 2lt models are very rare, but I'm wondering if the cortina 2lt will bolt in with not too much pissing around? EG i wanna keep the same 4sp gb, and i dont wanna muck around with making new mounts etc, i just want something that will bolt in??

Failing that, I'll go for the esky 1600, but does anyone have any information on fitting the 'tina 2lt?

Re: Escort engine conversion

Dr-X,

To put the 2litre in isn't too bad.. except for a few points:

* Cortina 2litre has a diff sump, you need to change that to the escort version to fit over the subframe cross member
* most likely different bell housing and starter motor
* from memory the exhaust is on the otherside.. so exhaust work to be done

Probably missing alot of things.. but it is late :)

Re: Escort engine conversion

Not too big of a job..
The 1100 /1600 [Kent] bellhousing will bolt up.I can't remember having issues with starter motor. I used 1600 clutch plate or atleast one that fits spiggot shaft, and 2Ltr presure plate..
Mount radiator further foward as posible, existing radiator will be o/k in good nick.Mounts bolt straight in, may have to use Kent engines mounts to fit? I know it's a mix of the two engines that makes conversion easy...Longer throttle cable..Yes different exhaust atleast up front..

Re: Escort engine conversion

thanks for yer help guys...has anyone got any pics of the finished conversion? would be really helpful.

On the other hand if i go down the 1600 road, should just be a straight swap with my 1100, right?

cheers.

Re: Escort engine conversion

Dr-X,

i had a eski 1600gt, mark 2 4 door, years ago, back then there wasnt any jap motors to put in them so i just fitted a V6 Capri motor, in NZ they are easier to find then here,
they just boltin same g/box,mounts,starter and electrics, just a 1 more exhast, only took me about 2 hrs to have a v6 in my eski,

I think the newer ones (efi )will fit in to.

Cheers

Re: Escort engine conversion

I did a 1300 to 2ltr conversion on my Mk1 with a cortina motor. Yeah the 1600 is a straight swap and if you can get your hands on a GT monifold you can stick a down draight weber on and they go pretty well.

To put in the 2ltr I had to swap the barckets on the radiator form left to right, and cut the top of the support panel off with the grinder then bolt the radiator back in the original mounting points (basically moves it back about 30mm.

Engine and gearbox went straight in, I just cut down the cortina gearbox mount and redrilled it to suit Escort alignment. Maybe needs spacing down from floor, cant remember.

i used same sump as cortina and put a 15mm plate spacer under each engine mount.
Cortina clutch, escort cable, escort speedo cable. New exhaust& second hand extractors. re-run fuel line down other side of car.

Need alternator bracket from 2ltr escort. Stubby starter from escort helps as well.
I was a student on a very tight budget (built the whole thing for $800, including short shift and full MK2 front end conversion and diff) so I just made my own radiator & heater hoses cut down from some others I had around. You need to remove the spacer from between the fan and the water pump for clearance, or fit a thermo.

Oh i think the extension housing and the cortina G/B has the shifter further back so I swapped it for the 1300 one. Tail shaft was a 0ne peice Mk2 number. And I fitted Mk2 13" rims (untill I pick up some 12 slotters for $30).

She was a bullit untill I give the old Pinto a little to many herbs one day.
On stripping it I had cracked the skirts on all the pistons, all the rings were broken and the cam lobes were a little worn :-) But it was still going and was only using a bit of oil, great little motors.
