Escort RS2000 mrkII

Ok.

I am after a new car (well new as in 2nd hand anyway). I have a limited budget and I saw this car today for sale and I need your opinions.

Now before I tell you about it I will get it checked out by RACV and a tubo specialist.

I have only talked with the guy for about 5 minutes and I am going to check the car out tomorrow. So I only know a few details.

Ok so I know that it is a MrkII RS2000, 2 litre, 4 door, its manual but i didn't ask if it was a our or five speed. He said its running at 10psi and has 140 hp at the rears. He is asking $5500 which I think is a darn good price.

What im worried about is the engine, turbo, and gearbox dying on me. He said that the engine and turbo has been recently re-conditioned as well. Obviosly I'll be asking for reciepts etc.

Anyone had any experience with a early model ford that has been turboed?

If RSgerry is out there I would like some advice from you too.

Any suggestions ould be appreciated.

Cheers. Allan

Rs 2000 escort

FoMo

You need to find out what he has done to the engine,if it hasnt got a good bottom end anything over 7psi on a pinto wont last long at high revs, gearbox and diff will last if you take care just dont flat change or do burnouts too often,if its a 5 speed you will want to change the diff to 3.9/4.1 to make use of the g/box it can be a bland with factory 3.54 ratio

Is it a real RS the the chassis no should be ck41#######R so should the engine number.
model code:11938
engine code:j

Make sure you check the passenger floor under the carpet, the fire wall dome around the bottom section if the black cover is still there toss it out, front suspesion bushes wear a bit on them apart from that the are a brilliant car,

Im turboing my Rs2000 at the moment go to my members gallery
for some photos of some of my Cars

aw shucks. now i'm blushing....

anyways, edxr6wgn is probably more mechanically minded than me, so his advice about the mechanicals is probably very good. having said that, it is still relatively cheap to pick up mechanical bits should something go wrong. i bought an unregistered van with lots of good mechanicals (worked 2 litre, big radiator, vented discs, quick rack, quick shift...and more i have yet to discover) for $1400.

certainly the advice about the rust problems is good. dont want to scare you, but edxr6wgn missed a couple of rust points. the usual spots in the wheel arches, but check the c pillar very carefully. open the boot and stick your hand up the inside of the pillar. i have seen cars that have the roof held up by bog.

best advice is pay someone reliable to check the car out for you. if you have an escort specialist in your state, and most states seem to have someone, go to them. if they charge $150 to have a really good look at the car, it could save you a lot of heartache or guarantee a lot of fun. of course, this advice pertains to all cars.

for extra advice, try here...

http://bne001w.webcentral.com.au/~wb165

these guys cmbined know everything there is to know about escorts. they may also know the car and be able to let you know if it is any good.

good luck. you will have a load of fun in it.

I have a 2l Pinto myself in a Capri. I dont want to put you off but like all things these things suck up an incredible amount of money very quickly, which can be very frustrating. Good people who know what they are talking about and what they are doing mechanically are hard to find. I have spent $200 on dyno sessions myself for little result becuase the people dealing with my engine knew little about it. If you can find it buy David Vizards book which is dedicated to the Pinto and has everything from NOS to Turbo to Supercharging and everything else you need to know. It is called "How to Modify Ford SOHC Engines". Find it if you can as it has a load of advice about the 2l engine.

If this bloke has turboed it ask for all the reciepts to make sure it is not a backyard job. According to Vizard's book if he hasnt had the block o ringed the thing will grenade itself in quick fashion. Ask him if he had it done.

Good luck mate

ok well this is what i found out today...its bloody quick

1. It is a genuine RS2000, 1980, 4dr

2. Its a four speed with a quickshift

3. It has a very small amount of rust or these funny rust bubble things on the right rear guard and a tiny it on the boot. But it doesn't look serious

4. The turbo is a T3..can someone fill me in on them...and the engine and turbo has been reinforced and re-conditioned 4 months ago

OK and now for the hitch...it doesn't come with a RWC. SO, I told him I didn't want it without a RWC so Im paying for the RWC check tomorrow and will see what they say. He has had it RWC before but said he did it through a friend.

Also the plates that come with the car are WILDRS. He want $500 ontop of the $5500. I think I will get them because Ill have to pay for rego if i dont get them, plus they are pretty coool i think.

Ill update you guys after the RWC.

Cheers
