Fiances just bought a '88 Laser Ghia - Need some info - Ford Forums

Hi guys,

My missus (well her dads pushed her I think) has just bought a '88 Laser Ghia. Apparantly from what I've been told it has (and I quote) "Air conditioning, auto, 5 doors, hatchback, oh and it has mag wheels. And its just been serviced". According to her old man its a carby too. Her old mans had a look at it and he rekons its good.

Can anyone tell me anything to look out for on these models? I'm a bit wary of it having never seen it before in the flesh. I don't really care about performance for it (in fact, I'd rather it be slow for her - she hasn't got her P's yet and is scared of driving, I'm convincing her to start).

So:

- Is there anything in particular to look out for in these models?
- What is the economy like on this model?
- Is it worth buying a service manual?

They are pretty durable & ecconomical things with no real major vices just the normal things to check for really.
The rear disc brakes can make some aweful noises when they are cold or reversing but they still work good even tho they can sound like they're worn out. I've found running metals on the back cures it tho.

How hard is it to change a Head Unit in one of these cars? I want to stick a MP3 deck in for her. Is it a matter of simply swaping the decks over, or are the speakers negatively grounded??

CV joint's, they are the 1st thing to check on a front wheel drive vehicle, check to see whether the rubber boot's are perished or in good nick, and drive the vehicle in full lock in a circle and listen for a clicking noise, this will tell if the CV joint's are stuffed, apart from that check the ussual, oil, rust etc.
