I had the exact same probblem with the battery on my first ever fiesta, one of the cells was faulty and its one of the most obvias things you look past, took me a whole week to figuer out what was up with it, i took most of the car to pieces and then you find out its the battery ohh how you laugh with silent rage, lmao.

Digging up this thread again cos my engine is now dead :*(
I was cruising along at about 75mph when.... ***BANG*** !!! The engine stopped and jammed causing the wheels to lock and I almost lost control of the vehicle. I think if I reacted any slower and put the clutch down any later I would have crashed.
The whole thing was caused by the timing chain snapping. I guess when it went, some of the valves may still have been down and when the pistons get to the top.... well you get the picture.
You expect timing belts to go sometimes, but I didn't expect the chain to break.
I had to have a new engine in my escort a few weeks back crusing along well not crusing more like speeding at 90mph and the engine died just made it back home and it had dropped one of the rings engine was done in :( gutted ahh well new engine now so yey!!!

Memran> it may be a coincidence with the battery - if one cell was down how would it crank over when cold - usually a slow hot crank speed is an indicator of initial timing being too far advanced. Check your static timing.
