Exclamation ford escort 1.4 timing belt snaped

i was driving the car the other day and the engine cut out, i investigated the problem and found that cam belt had gone.

to try to save money i decided to reset the timing and put on a new belt on hopeing that it hadn't damaged the valves.

once i put the belt on after carring out everything that was needed

tryed started the car it didnt want to start but did in the end, it wont idle it just shakes and cuts out

but if i start it and idle the revs a little higher at say 2000rpm it will stay running but you can tell it isnt happy

if i was to wip the head off and find X amount of valves are damaged how easy or hard are they to replace?

Re: ford escort 1.4 timing belt snaped

The CVH engine is very easy to work on and parts are readily available, if you're sure everythings set up correctly there may well be one or more valves bent. Always worth trying just a new belt first, sometimes you get away with it.

Re: ford escort 1.4 timing belt snaped

Cripes considering you're already in trouble with the cambelt I'd have made sure when I fitted a new one I'd got the timing spot on, otherwise you'd be back to square one- the cam sprocket has a pointer that lines up with a dot on the cylinder head- I HOPE thats what you meant...

Lightbulb Re: ford escort 1.4 timing belt snaped

yeah that is what what i mean, i know what im doing, its just i wasn't sure which point it was because there is two points on the cylinder head, if you look at the cam belt side of the engine (front face) there is two timing points for the sproket, one in the center and one to the left about 3cm away from the first one.

i have carryed out a compression test on the cylinders and the
1st cylinder had about 190psi 2nd 0psi 3rd 180psi and the 4th 180 again

how do you do the valves then ??

thanks

Re: ford escort 1.4 timing belt snaped

Uh-oh looks like 1 or 2 bent valves @ No.2, should be obvious with the head off, you'll need a valve spring compressor (halfords or your local motor factors should come with instructions, if not there's plenty out there on the net most valve jobs are the same, or get yourself a Haynes here;
All matching items for sale.
remove valve collets, fit new valve (no real need for grinding unless there's big damage to the seat) new head gasket/bolts, rocker gasket job done.
