ford escort heater smelling

hi i have an s reg ford escort air con heater works fine but has a burning smell when switched on been told it could be heater matrix i have seen one on ebay it looks like a radiator but could it be the fan that blows in the smell there are no smells coming from the engine be grateful if anyone has any ideas kind regards gary

It could be the fan.

Can you still run the heater and get heat without the fan going and if so does it smell.

Generally the heater is simply a small radiator or core that has the engines hot water running through it so as it's only boiling water temp then it doesnt usually smell.

Has the engine been losing water lately and if so then maybe the core is leaking water and causing the smell.
