Getting Error Codes - Ford Forums

Question for you all....

Yesterday (07/08/03) I took my car, a 1997 Ford Escort Sport LX, to the local mechanic to find out why my "Service Engine Soon" light was on. We plugged the computer up to my car and the computer spit out this error code: P1443. My question for you all is what in the world could that error code mean. He was talking it could be something to deal with my emmisons. If you could get back to me on suggestions on what else it could be or if this is the correct assumption. Last thing I want to do is fix something that does not need to be fix.

Code P1443: Evaporative Emission Control System - Vacuum System - Purge Control Solenoid or Purge Control Valve fault

Several conditions can cause this code to be set. A loose or broken gas cap, a damaged carbon canister, damaged or plugged fuel vapor hose, a damaged purge solenoid, Purge Flow (PF) sensor or Vapor Management Valve (VMV) are all possible causes. A multimeter or scan tool can be used to test these components.

I realize you sent this message years ago, but I just had this happen: my Service Engine Soon light came on in my 97 Ford Escort and the mechanic said it was because of a damaged vapor solenoid and purge flow sensor. He wants to charge me $426 to repair it. Is that too much? Thanks.
