Question Key Stuck in Ignition

Hello everyone, I own a 2001 Escort Zx2, I have had the car for almost 5 years bought it 15,000 miles, now has 86,000 miles. about 10 months ago I had a problem with my car being stuck in park. I took the car to pepboys they told me I had a bad solenoid wire and fixed it. now about 3 months ago, I have a problem with taking my key out of the ignition. the key will not turn to the off position. on random days it will come out completely but as soon as I put it back in it gets stuck. is this another solenoid issue? anyone else run into the same problem as I? I really hope its not going to cost me a fortune to fix. Any advice is appreciated

Re: Key Stuck in Ignition

This was a bit of a concern on earlier Escorts (european models). A friend of mine at the time owned one and he took the key OUT while we were driving along LOL. Not nice.

I'd have the lockset looked at. I can't see it being an electronic problem, more mechanical. Depending on what you think a fortune is, it shouldn't cost more than $20 for someone to diagnose it as a lock problem, in which case a new key cylinder would have to be located (salvage yard perhaps) and you'd have to get new keys machined.

Re: Key Stuck in Ignition

Hi
You are very lucky because you can get your key into the on position. You need to replace the key drum. To do this you turn your key to the on position. Underneath the steering column directly below the ignition there usually is a hole. You stick a skinny nail through the hole in the plastic and into a hole in your ignition. This will push a pin up and you just pull the ignition out with your key. Any partshouse should have a new key drum and key for you. If there is no hole in the plastic surrounding your steering column you will have to take that plastic off (4 screws) and find the pin hole. I am quite sure you can do fords without removing the plastic. Hope this works for you

Sorry, but no poke hole n the escort. They use a mazda style ignition lock. Completely different from most Fords

Re: Key Stuck in Ignition

Sounds like the solenoid again, if so you can just remove it. All it does is prevent you from turning the ign. off, locking the steering wheel and removing the key while driving down the road.
