Re: MK 1 Capri Steering Column

No mark 1 capri had a colapsible steering problem. Dont even think mk 2's had them, looking at finding a tf cortina column. Any one got one and can measure the overall length of the shaft.

Well I'm only trying to save you some hassle here but if Ford Australia stated on the compliance plate that the car complied with ADR10 (which my October 1970 Capri does) then either they were lying about their compliance with Australian Design Rules or you have a collapsible steering collumn which in the Capri's case is probably no more than the concertina on the steering wheel mounting.

I got the information from the NSW RTA's web site: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/search97/s97is.vts & went to their very useful Vehicle Standards Information No. 06 - Guidelines for Light Vehicle Modifications & it is written very clearly on page 4

"If the replacement engine has a capacity more than 45% of the largest optional engine for the vehicle and the vehicle is 'pre ADR 10/--' , a collapsible steering collumn is to be fitted."

If your Capri complies with ADR 10 & your engineer doesn't agree with that then you could try a MK2 Escort collumn but it will have the same problem as the Cortina collumn in that you need a much bigger hole in the firewall for it to pass through. A Gemini collumn may be an easier option for you.

HTH Jim...

Thanx for that info. I have a 1970 capri also, but mine does not have adr 10 stamped onit, and i was led to believe that no MK 1 capri had it. ADR 10 was intoruced in 1974, so most vehicles prior to that did not have collapsible columns in them. I am still trying to chase up a gemini column to see if that will work, but i will also look into the mk 2 escort and cortina columns as well.

Re: MK 1 Capri Steering Column

Now I am going to humbly apologise & stand corrected because I can admit when I am wrong. My 1970 Capri in fact does not comply with ADR 10. I have a compliance plate off a 1972 Capri that I wrecked some years ago & was going to look at that but could not find it.

Anyway last night I took a couple of photos of steering columns from a Gemini, XB Falcon, EA Falcon, VN Commodore & Capri. Surprisingly the VN and EA items look promising.

PM me with your email if you would like me to forward the photo's.

Regards, Jim...

Yes please, they would be good to look at.
Also, i spoke to an engineer in melbourne who builds mk 1 cortina's, and they use AE82 corolla columns, and they require little modification to fit. I should have one this weekend to have a look at. Will keep you posted.

My email is blownv8@ceinternet.com.au

Thanx in advance for the pics.
