Mk2 rs2000 - common problems?

Morning all,

Im new to the forum and about the same with escorts...
At the moment im in the process of looking for a vehicle (hopefully a mk2 rs2000) but im still pretty stuck for knowledge about them.

Are there any reliability issues with the mk2's? and if so are they easy to deal with? also are there any parts that are likley to go FUBAR before others?

Ive had a bit of a look around but havnt seen alot of eskys for sale around here on the Gold Coast/ brisbane area; am I right? or am I just looking in the wrong spot :p

any help would be great

cheers

Nathan

Re: mk2 rs2000 - common problems?

Get one in good nick - and that will save you a lot of $$$.
As for common problems, the 3 main ones that I encountered were:
1) rust in the bulkhead (check by tipping water down the base of the windscreen and then checking driver's and passenger's footwells for water),
2) stripped nylon thread on the gear box (resulting in the shifter coming out when least expected)
3) noisy cam (due to oil spray bar clogging up from poor maintenance. Replacing cam is a head off job on the 2ltr)...

I found them very solid and depending on how you drive them will determine how quickly parts will go FUBAR before others. I never had a problem with the diff, but mates of mine were replacing them all the time from doing burnouts.

If you want an RS2000, get one of them, and not settle for anything less. I found it to be a far better package over a normal escort! Front guards are spot welded on, so you can't just "bolt" an RS front on another car.

As for finding one, keep looking on carpoint, the trading post, and other advertising venues.

The 2 door seems to be harder to find than the 4 door.

I've have seen very few escorts without the bulk head problem. They also had the wiper stalk problem as well as what EBXR mentioned. The 2 door shells were imported as the 4 door is unique to Australian made models in the RS. We Australians just love our 4 doors

Ok, here is probably the most important thing you will read. I don't know anything technical because my brother is the mechanic not me but he used to own a RS2000 and it was his pride and joy until he was driving down the ring road and there was a fire under the bonnet. It started from a dodgy fuel line going in/out of the carbie I think and when I looked around online it had happen to more than one person before so be very weary unless you feel like writing your car off.
