Aren't the German RS2000's or the Group 1 Spec RS2000's the ones to look out for?
My personal fave is the RS1800 with the flat front.
Well I guess what i'm after is about 200hp out of the RS2000 with a 5 spd manual and all that fun stuff that goes with a nicely done up car. Is 200hp possible without going forced induction? I'm happy having to work around getting EFI heads and such. Definately going to be a project car worked into a mini club racer :)
What would I expect to pay for a RS2000 2 or 4 door (doesn't worry me too much) in 'reasonable' condition - straight panels and bodywork in good condition? And where is the best shopping avenues for such old cars?

BA XR6 - December 2002 ~ Soon to disappear if Ford CRC can't fix it....
45,000km service coming up - and i'll be asking for a sizable list of fixes:
* Gearbox (3rd time)
* Steering click (5th time)
* Brake Shudder (2nd time, and has the applied "Fix")
* etc...
After having fun around calder in the BA XR, i'm now looking for a play car... Escort RS2000 has come to mind. Any suggestions about where to get one and things to look out for... (apart from whats already been covered in this thread). I've never driven a car which is almost as old as me.
EG: whats the difference between an 1979 RS2000 (built in Australia) and a 1980 RS 2.0 (built in UK).... Do they run on unleaded? etc...
thats exactly what I want to do..but use it as my daily driver until I finish uni then garage it and go from there..I cant wait untill I get all the cash...but knowing my lucky everyone in Aus will be snatched up by then.

Advertised as $4000ono. Price is negiotable for a quick sale.
David Vizard has a good book on unlocking power in the 2ltr pinto motor.
You can also go the twin cam sierra head (expensive) but a lot of potential.
Cool... might look out for this one. Any idea where to pick it up from (Melbourne)? Is it commonly available? What sorta revs can you get out of a midly worked 2ltr with twin cams? I'm hoping for about 7000rpm. Are these achievable?

Price wise, anything from 3k to 7k for a solid Aussie Mk2 RS. 4 doors are at the cheaper end of the scale.
Cool :) Thanks for the good feedback :)

7000 is achievable. I used to take my stockers RS to 6000 regularly. Just remember that the twin cam conversion is pricey (2k for a good head), and you will neet to flycut the pistons as well.
There is an Orange 2 door RS2000 in the ACT with a balanced and blueprinted bottom end with the piston's flycut for the twin cam head. The car is only running a big valve single cam head. It is my old car, and the motor cost a mate 6k... with the twin cam head. The current owner doesn't know what he has!

200HP is easily achievable with the Cosworth Head but is a bit more difficult with the standard head.
For 7000rpm you will need new con rods as these will fail after a while at these sort of revs. The best option would be to get the whole Sierra Cosworth long motor (no turbo and manafolds), put high compression forged pistons in it and run on twin sidedraught webers or injection. with standard rods and crank will withstand up to 9000rpm. you will also need non turbo cams which are avaliable form various places. With this combination 200HP would be fairly easy and these engines have great potential with over 300HP without forced induction achievable but at a cost.
Another way which is fairly cheap but a lot of work is required to do it is to use 2.8 V6 Granada pistons which will also take the engine out to 2094cc and 1600cc Fiesta Diesel rods, although the rods need the small end lightened and the crank journals reground smaller which makes the crank weaker but this should be fine for road and occasional competition use. This combination should withstand up to about 8500 rpm.
A standard unported Cosworth head will produce around 170HP.
All of this info was from a book "How to Power tune Ford SOHC 'Pinto' and Sierra Cosworth DOHC Engines" by Des Hammill. David Vizards book is worth a look aswell. This is book is very similar (in some sections looks like a copy of) but includes a lot of tuning info on the Cosworth head.
From what ive heard it isnt really that good a motor and not much is really interchangable with the 2.0lt engine. A 2.3lt stroker crank is available for the 2.0lt but is fairly expensive.
