confused Need Assistance in Troubleshooting

My daughter has a 99' ZX2 with about 78K miles. Periodically, it will stutter/hesitate, regardless of speed. One time it completely died, but when I got to the car about 30 minutes later, it started fine and ran fine thereafter. The other day, it started hesitating again. She pulled over, turned off the key, waited about 30 seconds, started it again and it ran fine. My sometime-mechanic looked at it and found nothing wrong. Some friends say it is a fuel pump. Others say it is a computer issue. Has anyone seen this before? Any insight would be appreciated. I am concerned since she will be going off to college in the fall with a car that (now) I am losing faith in it's reliability.
