confused no fuel

I have a 95 ford escort which seems not to be getting fuel to the engine. (Yes it has gas in it). My son was driving it when it started dynig out, he made it home, and then after a few turns of the engine it started up again and took it for a test run to see if the problem was still there and made it about a half block before it died again. It hasn't started since. He said it was acting like it was running out of gas. There is a little hose connected to this thing under the hood and i took it off and no gas came out of it...even when cranking the engine. I know gas should come out of this hose, cuz i filled it up one time and started losing fuel rapidly, so i looked under the hood and gas was shooting out of it, (the hose). I've pushed the inertia switch, still nothing. I purchased a new fuel pump, but hear to differant stories on how to get to this thing...1-drop whole tank...2-under back seat. I've tryed to take off the back seat and cant get it off. Yes I am woman...maybe that's why I cant figure this thing out...Please can you help me. It's not a hatchback nor is it a wagon.
