Just recently my 91 EGT's tape deck has been acting up. I know it's silly to worry about a tape deck, and that I should upgrade to a new stereo anyway, but for the time it is really annoying. I use it to play my CDs through the portable CD player car kit. I've tried the kit to broadcast the CD signal to the FM receiver, but it never comes in clear. Just recently, out of the blue, the tape deck started to hiss, crackle and whine. I thought it was the car kit, so I've tried several, and it is always there. I tried cleaning & demagnitizing the deck, and that didn't help at all. It is more pronounced in the left channel, but present in the right as well. Sometimes it is louder or higher pitched, and sometimes it is reduced to a ticking with a low hiss. I can not discern any patterns or rwasons for the changes in the interference, but it is always there. It is not present in the FM or AM tuning functions of the stereo. Does anyone have any idea what this could be, and is it possible that I may be able to eliminate this or am I finally going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new system. Thanks in advance.

there are two things that immediately come to mind. either (1) as you suspect, the tape mechanism is going bad, or (2) more likely, because you mentioned it also happens with the FM adapter as well, you're getting some sort of electrical interference through your cigarette lighter adapter. try using your cd player with batteries and see if that helps any. Of course, getting a new head unit (and especially speakers) couldn't hurt regardless...

It could be your earthing strap. Have a goosey at the block. There should be some sort of cable running between block and chassis. Give both ends a bit of a clean (as in take off and remove a little paint kind of clean). Or swap for a larger cable.

Same thing happened to the EDV8 - cleaned up nicely. No audible hissing anymore. Just be careful you dont send a voltage spike through the computer - shouldnt be a problem when the engines off.
