Hi.
So I bought a used Ford Escort ZX2. 1999- It dies at red lights or if stopped unless I put it in park and push on the gas a bit. I thought it was probably a fuel pump issue or the fuel filter- but now it smells like gas inside the car whenever I get in it.

I am hoping this isn't going to kill my Christmas savings....

Is it possibly anything LESS expensive than the fuel line? Can they be repaired? or only replace?

Could be a bad fuel pump gasket allowing the gas fumes to enter the car. The top of the gas tank and the fuel pump are accessible from under the rear seat. If the fuel pump has ever been replaced it's possible the person making the repair didn't get the gasket seated properly or they damaged the gasket during installation.

Checked idle control valve and fuel cap / seal ?
