Hi guys, Ive intermittently had this problem where occasionally my escort (K reg 1.4lx Carb engine) will fail to start, turn the key all the electrics work, lights, stereo, dashboard lights but the ignition will not start, nothing will crank, no noise or anything....
To get it home ive had to get random ppl to push it while i pop it into second gear and start it that way... bit of a pain cus today i was at home and no1 around to push = late for work. A while ago it happened and i put it into reverse and kept the clutch down and it started?? now that doesnt do anything at all so i dont know.... dont know my way round under the bonnet so i want to know what it is likely to be before i head to the garage and get ripped off :)

Brent.....Check your Starter Silonide...or just replace the starter.....

Poping the Clutch in a Very Bad Idea....and doing this for a number of times will cause Transmission damage.

What Year...and Engine Size for this car???

Hello and good day to you:

Your Starter for this Year Escort should be located As you are facing the engine from the front of the car. The starter is on the back side of the engine below the fuel intake assemblies.

You will need to Jack the car up to get to the starter motor lower bolt, and is accessible from beneath the vehicle....there are two..2..mounting bolts that are accessible from the top.

The Starter is a large cylinder type...it may look 1/2 Black, and 1/2 Silver. The Starter solenoid is a cylinder type...black in color...and will sit on top of the Starter.

The starting system is composed of a permanent magnet gear-reduction starter motor, solenoid, battery, ignition switch, manual lever position or clutch engage switch and connecting wires.

Vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle have a manual lever position switch in the starter control circuit, which prevents operation of the starter unless the shift lever is in Neutral or Park. The circuit on vehicles with a manual transaxle prevents operation of the starter motor unless the clutch pedal is depressed.

It might be your ignition. The pins might be messed up and you might have to replace it. If you turn the key and there is no noise at all it very well might be the ignition. hope this helps
