confused Tick out of the engine.

Hello,

I am new to this forum and i don't know much about cars so excuse me if i make typo's or ask weird questions.

I got a FORD Escort out of ''96.

Since last week i hear some kind of a TICK what can be pretty loud out of my engine..
I turned my window open and went to drive.. It started when i putted him in his reverse.. But now it happents when i shift sometimes and just while riding..
I am scared that there is something wrong..

I got this car for about 3 months and since last week this started.

- While riding
- While shifting (Sometimes)
I hear a ''tick'', sometimes loud and sometimes soft.

Can anyone help me about what this can be??

Greetz,

Jack.

Re: Tick out of the engine.

G'day...

I'm new here as well so no problems!

I drive a Ford Laser which is probably the Aussie equivalent of your Escort - mine is a 1.8l with the Mazda motor. Offhand I believe the American Escorts of this era had a Mazda engine. Anyway, I have noticed that the engine on mine tends to tick at idle on occasion and can also be heard when driving. Try checking the oil as apparently the engines tend to get a bit tappety when the oil is low. Obviously if it is low top it up and see whether the noise goes away.

Good luck!

Re: Tick out of the engine.

If you havent had an oil change in a while get one and add the silver restore or lucas oil additive. I tore my engine apart trying to find out what was ticking and I finally got an oil change and the ticks gone. Hope this helps

Question Re: Tick out of the engine.

Hi, I have a 2001 Focus with 2.0L Zetec. I have just under 90k. This past week I was a bit stuck in snow and reved a bit forward and back........finially got out and drove home. Got home and the oil light came on so I turned it off let it cool and checked the oil, it was low so I added oil and ran engine for 5 or 10 minutes at idle and the light went out.
Now I have a slight ticking noise when the rpms come up that sounds like it is under the valve cover. Does anyone have any idea as to what it may be? Can it be repaired by me? I am not a certified mechanic but I have done many repairs to many cars and pickups over the years. If not is it an expensive job to have someone else do? Thanks for any thoughts on this. Mark in CT

Re: Tick out of the engine.

the lifters are hydraulic roller. oil pressure fills them up and they act like a shock absorber. the lifter can go bad and make the top end ticking noise.. a simple check is to pull the valve cover off and see if any or the rocker arms are loose.. 10 minutes and 3 bolts.
