Timing belt on 99 escort - Ford Forums

Hi all,
Anybody here ever change the timing belt on a 1999 escort, 1.9L? If so, how big of a job was it? I am looking into it and it looks like I can actually get at it without removing the engine. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

timing belt, is it OHC on the outside, or do you mean chain ??

I had a 2l OHC cortina and removed the metal cover, let the tensioner off, then just slip the belt of and slipped the new one on, there are timing marks if you want to align those to make sure nothing moves.

Yup, its a single OHC. Belt is on the outside. Looks easy enough to replace, but I want to make sure it actually is eay before pulling it apart. Screwing up can have.....undesirable consequences.

Yes it is as easy at it looks, just back the tensionor off (thing about the midle pushing on the belt) pull the belt off and put the new one on, the timiming marks are a dot on the head, that you line the top cam to, has a little pointer, and the bottom has a mark that I think points to TDC (not sure been a while) but was as easy as to do :0)

There should be dots on the two main gears. If you have those two meeting each other then you should be fine. Oh and the distributor set on the 2nd or 3rd spark plug cable. It worked on my '89 LX.

I bought a 99 Ford Escort with 51,000 miles on it. I purchased and extended warranty for it. I was told to change my timing belt right around 80,000 miles. Im right at 79,000 now and my car broke down. Now Im being told that my warranty might not cover the work because it should have been done earlier than 80,000 miles.
