Unstable Engine..

My early 90 mod escort 1,4i Manual seems to have some engine problems, when the engine is cold, I start it up and it`ll run fine, but as i start driving and for some reason needs to stop, it sometimes dies on me as I release he gas, and push the clutch.,? and other times when the engine is hot it has a tendensy of leveling the idle at about 2000rpm..?

Is this a common problem with this car/engine?
anybody got an Idea what cauces it, and how i can fix it?
Please help.

this is a Euro spec Escort, so I don`t know if you have them in the US,

thanks!

hmmmm, first thing I would ask is when was your last tune up?

I don't know if you have an EGR vavle on the euro model...I cannot remember fromt he ones I had when I was there...but if so that can cause problems....is it carbed or injected?
