I was thinking today about what mods I should pencil in for my 2L Mk II Escort...
I know these are pretty mild mods, but they should make a reasonable difference without changing the cars driveability or fuel economy so drastically that the car is no longer practical as a daily driver.
Hardened valve seats, so it can run on unleaded.
Get the heads ported and raise the compression ratio slightly (only very slightly, nothing over the top, if I can't run it on PULP or Optimax without some octane additive, then the comp ratio is too high...)
A good set of extractors (probably 4-1 instead of 4-2-1) and 'sports' zorst.
A mild cam designed to work best at between 3,000 and 5,000 RPM whilst still being drivable at low revs (I don't want to have to rev the engine too hard).
The diff out of a 1.6L Mk II Escort.
A nice set of 14" mags (rally style) with some decent tyres wrapped around them.
Lower the car a little.
And finally, a 5 speed gearbox, probably a sierra box.
So, how does that sound? Like I said, nothing radical, but should be a good daily driver still, as well as going a little better then a stock Mk II Escort...
Oh, and it goes without saying that I'll make the car look a little better, treat it to some new paint, and stick on some driving lamps to give it that 'Just rallied' look.

Higher gear ratio then the 2L item. Can't remember the ratios of the two different diffs off the top of my head, but the 1.6L diff is closer to a 4:1 then the 2L diff. Faster takeoff, but higher revs at the same speed.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I'm keeping the engine mods pretty mild. I might end up sticking with the stock diff, depends how much difference the engine mods make - if the engine makes LOTS more power after modifying it, then I'll probably stick with the stock diff.
From what I've read, the main difference between the sierra 5 speed box and the 4 speed box I've got now is the fact that the 5th gear is an overdrive, so it shouldn't make much difference to the diff if I put in the 5 speed or stick with the 4 speed. The main reason I'm interested in the 5 speed is so that the engine isn't turning as fast when I'm on the freeway, so I'll get better fuel economy - this is my daily driver after all...

Oh yeah, just remembered another mod I'm considering, adding a thermo fan and getting rid of the crankshaft driven engine fan. Good or bad idea, and if it's a good idea, can anybody recommend where I should get the thermo from and which one to get?
