Hey guys...

I really need some assistance.

I have a 2005 Mercury Montego (Build Date 11/2004).

Anyway, the A/C compressor is going out on me (no cold air at low speed driving, high speed driving it cools down a bit though...fan blows hard, and vents all work fine - no strange noises - typical A/C Compressor replacement needed)

Anyway, I bought the A/C Compressor and the Evaporator (drier). I brought the parts in to my local mechanic that I usually deal with, and was originally quoted that the job would take 2-3 hours total.

He just called me a few minutes ago and said that the job is probably going to take much longer than expected and would require dropping the sub-frame off the car in order to access the a/c compressor. He can't do this job he says, and advised me to seek another mechanic.

My question to you guys is....does the 2005 montego require the Sub-Frame to be dropped in order to access the A/C Compressor? If not, how would I go about doing it properly? Is there a trick or shortcut method to getting this done?

Have the pressures been checked to know the compressor is bad? Other problems can cause the same symptoms.

Thanks for the link, that was VERY helpful....doesn't look like there's anything about removing the sub-frame at all...hmm.

As far as it being the compressor, yes I had it looked at by 3 different mechanics all of which confirmed it was indeed the a/c compressor.

If that repair guide is correct, it shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours at most.

Maybe your mechanic is not qualified to do your repair ? Maybe he doesn't want to get involved ? Are you qualified to do the job ? Do you have recovery equipment and a CFC
licence if you want to do this yourself ? Does the compressor pump down ? Your HVAC is electronicly controled. What codes are you getting ? What pressures are you getting ? If your compessor did granade you will have bits and pieces contaminating the entire system. BIg BUCKS. If the system is not completely cleaned save up for a new compressor. You will need one next year. What it the T.D. across the TX valve ?
