car makes a high whining sound when I start it

and it makes the sound at slow speeds also like aroung 35mph. My car is a Ford 500, 2007. I didn't see a place for Ford 500 so I figured that this is close. Anyone have that problem? I thought it might be the alternator.

There is a 500 section. It's with the newer Taurus. As for the whining noise does it stop when put in gear? What Trans is in the car?

Re: car makes a high whining sound when I start it

It may be your power steering pump.

When it is really cold, my 05 Montego will make a sort of howling/horn noise at cold start for a few minutes but it is definitely not power steering related.

If it is power steering related, the noise will change when you give the car more throttle. Whereas the noise my car makes does not change when more throttle is applied.
