I know they happen often so I'm sure you guys all have a few new stories.
Just a couple of hours ago I was driving down the Gt. Western Highway (sydney) and pulled up to this VL Commodore at the lights. I figured out it was a manual by watching the way it drives and my theory was proven when we both took off from the lights.
The VL got about half a carlength on me when we took off (when i say half a carlength I mean my bonnet ended about halfway down the VL) and it was pulling away as it was hitting its sweet spot in 1st. Shortly after the VL shifted to 2nd the LTD was doing 4000rpm and obviously catching up. Changed to and at about 4500rpm and now we were dead even. By the time we hit 100km/h I had about half a carlength on the VL. Then the VL started to catch up a bit but once again between 3500 and 4500rpm in 2nd I started pulling away. By this time the VL was sniffing the LTD's arse. Then 3rd gear came at about 125km/h and the VL had closed the gap to half a carlength. THat was the way it stayed upto 140km/h when I had to slow down for some fast approaching cars.
I reckon it was an awesome race because it was so close. There was practically nothing in it and it was good to see the different stages at which both cars hit their powerbands.
Although when you take into consideration that a 1600kg 3 speed LTD with 2.77 diff and a 1300kg 5 speed commodore with 3.45 diff had such a close race you realise which car really has the balls.
The funny thing is that the VL driver was a chick!
Well you have the same setup as me (MPFI motor) except you have the advantage of a manual gearbox, higher diff ratio, exhaust and a couple of hundred less kg so I reckon you would have easily kicked the VL.
Great shit man, I love hearing of ford kick ass over holden especially the ones who have drivers who think they are it.
I bet some dick a few weeks ago too twice at two sets of lights, he had a VN but auto. feels great
one of my brothers mates has a ef 5spd with extractors and exhaust and it bloody flys, he doesnt worry about going v8 commos but hsv's! (alot closer race)
Great stuff Zomwit, I had a similar experience coming home from work on Tuesday night.
At one set of lights I was on the front row and a VL Calais with P plates pulled up behind me beause the row next to me was taken so I gave it a bit off the lights as you do and made a gap between myself and the rest of the cars behind me so the VL could pull up beside me at the next red light. At this point I had no idea how i'd go, for all I knew the VL could have been a turbo but I figured I would try anyway.
I manually put the car in first and floored it as soon as the lights went green, the VL did the same and it was literally neck and neck before I sensed he was about to pull away, luckily by then my car was starting to pull quite hard as well. I held first as long as I could bear to and shifted up into second and it was still dead even. 100kmph and I had the slightest edge. Just up the road was a car parked to the side so there was a guy driving in the middle of the road to avoid it. We were both approaching at a rapid speed (we were doing 120 in a 60 zone). The VL had no where to go as he was in the left lane, so he backed off, but I just kept it flat and overtook on the right hand side of the road... By far the best and closest race I've ever had, also the most satisfying. A victory for Ford fans everywhere
I achieved something the Ford V8 supercar drivers only dream of and that was to beat a Holden.
"I achieved something the Ford V8 supercar drivers only dream of and that was to beat a Holden-Ash"
Whats that supposed to mean dude? It was just an illegal street drag that the guy pulled out of for fear of killing himself! Do 160 laps around bathurst, beat the guy in the commo, and then you can brag! The v8 supercar category is very tough so dont be dissin the blue oval boyos.
I must admit you guys have got me confused. I'd be happy to beat a Corolla let alone a VL, let alone a manual VL. It seems to defy the laws of physics.
I agree with ILS, I dont really like the VLs but Id imagine manual ones are pretty quick, I have dragged and beaten a manual VL before, but it didnt appear (on the outside) to be in the best of conditions) But yeah good on yas for doing ya thang and showin those commo mo' fo's how its done.
One night me and my sisters boyfriend went and did some drags from lights. He drove VL manual, me EB CFI manual, It was so damn close it wasnt funny. It depended on who got the better start. But it shows even the CFI can keep up.
My old EA Spac 3 speed would slaughter Manual and Auto N/A VLs and was a little quicker than VNs up to 130kmh when going from a roll. (From a stop they would murder me)
yes, hehe you meant that comment the way i thought you did.
Anyhow, I never driven a VL, but do you think EA Falcon S MPEFI 5speed could beat it easily ? (If driven properly of course)
the way you guys are talking you'd think that vl's were faster than the speed of light.
A manual MPI EA would flog a n/a VL. I used to own an R31 Skyline (same motor as VL), it was an auto and took nearly 10 seconds to do 0-100km/h. I realise the skyline was a bit heavier than a vl, but still vl's aren't very fast. Stock VL turbo's did 0-100km/h in 7.8 secs which isn't much faster than a 5 speed MPI EA.
The speed of light may be faster than a VL, but so are a lot of other cars.
A manual EA vs automatic VL isn't a fair contest, and the VL would put up a fight even then. I don't particularly admire VL drivers in general, but I admit a comparable EA would need to be modified to keep up - and those same mods could be done to a VL and it would stay ahead.
LOL @ ILS
I was only cruising the EA when you were in it
Honestly, a VL auto or man would be an easy task for my EA. I reckon it would even give a stock Turbo a run for it's money.
I havent lost to a V6 commo since I put the manual in, and I reckon the 5.0 commo. is not too much quicker.
I pulled away from my mates VNSS (Not stock) in 1st gear, but we had to stop because we were in traffic. I reckon the VN would have pulled away when we both hit 2nd, but it was enough to surprise my mate, and make me happy.
The only drag I have backed down from was against an EL XR6 manual. I regret it now because I would have loved to know how much it beats the EA by.
The difference between VL manuals and autos is nowhere near as great as with EA manuals and autos. They are pretty closely matched.
I've driven my mate's VL (with extractors) on numerous occasions and its not super quick. It is, however, the quickest stock (apart from the extractors) n/a VL I have come across. They feel like they have no torque whatsoever under 3000rpm. From then on they pull hard thanks to their gearing.
If an MPI LTD can be such a close match for VL's than an MPI Falcon in good condition should easily be able to pull it off.
hey, my lil' mazda rx4 sedan with 5 spd manual kills au falcon xr8's and 6's all the time...
