HELP! Love my Festiva, wont let it die

Ok, so. This thing runs great, 1992 red Ford Festiva.
BUT.
When it gets down to about a quarter of a tank of gas, if I try to go on a highway it will choke horribly, warm weather, cold weather, doesnt matter. Fill the tank up, goes away. This only happens on accelleration and only with a 1/4 tank or less.
So, I figured perhaps this is a fuel filter problem?
Now I cant find where the fuel filter is, cant find that online either.

Does anyone think this sounds like its the problem?
And can someone point out real quick where I can find it, heh, thanks.

Re: HELP! Love my Festiva, wont let it die

If yours is anything like my 91 Festiva, you will find that you have two fuel filters. There is an inline filter mounted just off the firewall near the steering column. There also is an in-tank filter attached to the fuel tank sending unit.

From your symptoms and without further diagnostics, I would guess that your in-tank filter is partially clogged.

While a constricted fuel filter may provide sufficient fuel flow for idle and low-speed operation, it can cause a loss in fuel pressure and inadequate fuel delivery when higher flow is required (acceleration and high-speed operation).

A bad in-tank filter is indicated since you only experience the problem with low fuel level. If the in-line filter was clogged, I would expect you to experience poor performance irrespective of the fuel level in the tank.

If you’re doing the work yourself, get a new fuel filter and a new gasket for the sending unit. If your local parts store doesn’t have the parts, you’ll find them online.

Access to the fuel tank sending unit pump is obtained after pulling the rear seat and rear carpet. To release the fuel line pressure, disconnect the electrical connector on the sending unit, start the engine and let it run until it stalls. Pull the sending unit and you’ll find mounted on it the fuel pump with the fuel filter.

Work safely.

Thanks Barry. Thats kinda what i had expected and certainly what I had feared. I mean, its not too terribly difficult Im sure, but I live in an Army Barracks and would be doing the work in a parking lot, never ideal when your talking about pulling or accessing the gas tank. I wonder how much this sort of thing would cost if I just brought it in, or if they could even be sure thats the problem. BAH.

Thanks though.
