I found at my 12 slotters at the front had cracks in them...they were cracked from the slot to the centrewhen the wheel hub goes on. They were a death trap waiting to happen!!!
Anyway, i went and got two more without centres. Now, the centres I had from my cracked rims dont fit my new ones...the backing plate and the chrome cap (dog bowl type thing) doesnt fit in the centre of the new wheel - it is a few mm too big. Should I just bash it in, or are there different size 12 slotter backing plates and caps?

The "better" twelve slots, including the factory ones dont need a retainer for the hubcaps. They just have 3 little bumps and you tap the cap onto the wheel itself.

Yer, my 12 slotters have those humps, therefore don’t need retainers, I have seen a few different styles of caps, so I would guess that there are different sizes, as long as you weren’t going to take the caps off, it would be fine, actually better so ppl cant pinch them.
Yer I know I didn’t really answer the question.

yes there are many different centers and backing plates, I remember a great deal of fustration trying to find four caps for my 12 slots. I eventually gave up on the dog bowl type and used the other center caps.
Try bashing it if you want ( i did) but you will probably have no luck ( i didnt!)
(i have a box of these dog bowl center caps that i dont want, but like everything else i own they are buried in the shed somewhere..)
the other plain plastic looking ones, off like xd,xe,xf?

Yeah tried bashing - need a fair bit of force!!
I think I have found a set that *may* fit. they are smaller diameter (by about 10mm) than mine, if they dont they were only $20 odd a throw so its no great loss...will chuck em up on ebay and should get my money back.
otherwise, I am just going to have my larger retainers pressed into the wheel. My local steel works will do this for a few $$. problem is i am worried if I take this option that the retainer is too deep and the cap will site too far out on the wheel...
