i remember reading years ago in a magazine that it took until the early 90s and the VN SS GroupA to beat it!

but i never knew if it was the fastest (4 door production car) over the 1/4 or top speed.. i imagine it was top speed.

Its top speed, the GTHO was built for touring car races, not drag racing.

I believe a hot Opel Cavallier ??(pommy Commodore) overtook it in the late 80s or early 90s.

there is a article on carsguide.com.au about them - search there ...the phase 3 pulled the quarter in 15.5 according to them...not that impressive considering they were *apprantly* 270 odd kilowatts...

Who cares what they did on the 1/4 mile. It was a road /touring race car. How fast it was around a circuit is what counts. Top speed and cornering. 1/4 mile times are irrelevant when you have to do 500 miles at Mt Panarama.

They did 140mph in road trim when they hit the rev limiter at 6100rpm. In race trim they could do over 150mph. Thats 240k. Thats fast.

Re: 1971 Ph3 Gt Ho

It was labelled the fastest four door sedan cause it reached top speeds close to 230kph and did the quarter mile at 14.4. Its actual power output always varied some people state 270kw-290kw but i guess if you convert what kinda horsepower it was pumping out in stock form and convert that in kilowatt language you could get a rough idea on power output. Also revved out close to 6500rpm if i remember right.

As for its rivals holden were close to matching that quarter mile time the VH grp 3 when brocky drove it claimed to have got 14.6, VL Walkinshaw 14.8-14.9 and probably your vn specials as well would of been close. VS GTS-R claimed to be a high 14sec car as well (excl. gen 3's).

At that time when the hoey was released the charger r/t and the torana xu1 both 6cyl's were capable of given the big giant a run for its money. I recommend that if your interested in this era maybe you should looking at Australian Muscle Car Magazine it concertrates on our very famous icons of racing im sure it can answer some questions you might have.

I suspect that it probably wasn't long. What was the top speed recorded at, then?

If it was 155mph or less, then any German uber-sedan from the late 80s onwards would kill it. So too the Aston Martin Lagonda. Maserati Quattroporte. Lotus Carlton/Omega... all depends on what the GTHO managed flat-out...
