hey everyone.
im weighing up my options atm and i am thinking of a few engine idea's for my xm.
Atm i lik the idea of a 302 or a 4L
i have been told that the 302 transplant is a easier one...so it is more appealing to me atm.
So for a 302 what do i need to do?
chassis kit from rod hadfield?
i already have bigger brakes and suspension is pretty much done but i want to do the shelby mod too it aswell.
i am aware that eventually i will need a better diff as the stock one wont last. But surely i can get away with the stock one to get the 302 legally reg'd?
what i really want to no is what work is involved and what needs to be done for engineering?
any help is appreciated
cheers
brendan
You need
1-disc brakes
2-2 speed wipers
3-hadfield kit
4-laminated w/screen
5-diff & tailshaft ( no point in moding stock tailshaft & then having to do another 1 when you change the diff later
6-wedges for ball joins to get corect angle so they dont bind when suspension travels upwards ( for shelby mod only )
7-radiator
8-you will need 5 stud wheels front & back
9-hadfield or rrs rack & pinion steering is a REALY good idea
( you will have to mod the steering coloum )
10-all of these mods will bolt right in without having to cut the car up
you havent said if it will be auto or manual
hope this helps
Terry

hey
that helps heaps
I already have:
5 stud wheels front & back
disc brakes
2 speed wipers
laminated w/screen
for the diff im thinkin 9" is probly the best option
and the trans will b auto which i would lik to make floor shifted instead of column.
so wat engine mounts do you use? Or are they all the same for a 302? i want to use a windsor.
The hadfield kit you say...is that just the chassis kit or something else?
cheers
brendan
Brendan
If the car is going to be LOW a 9" is the way to go
If not a Borgwarner out of a centura will be fine
Use std XR-E V8 engine mounts
Hadfield kit is
engine mounting plates
engine cross member
gearbox gross member
radiator mounting brackets
you will also need a 2 speed fan heater & windscreen dimister
fitting a V8 in 1 of those old girls is a very easy job
std exhaust manifolds will fit or if you want extractors they are available ( same as r/h drive 64/66 mustang )

Hadfeild make extractors for the XP/XM V8 if you want to go that way. It is fun swinging in the V8 into the engine bay. Make sure you have a good engine crank which lets you move the engine around a bit.

Currently looking for an 9 inch disc rear end.
Thanks for them this guys its helping heaps!
i fogot to mention it already has a 2 speed heater but i aint too sure about the demister side of things...
will the centura diff go straight in without any/little mods?
also the wedges u list above wat r they made out of? and how hard r they too make?
I like extractors more than stock manifolds so i think they r the way too go
cheers
brendan
Diff will have to have mounts welded on
Not to hard to make once you have a look
made of steel
Things to do when fitting the engine in the car
1-jack the back of the car up as far as you can get it
this opens up the engine bay
2- when you start to put the engine into the engine bay have a mate slowly lower the back of the car as the engine is going in
regards
Terry

So with the diff is the track width the same?
and them wedges that are to do with the shelby mod, wat r they made from as i think you were talking about the diff mods wen u mentioned steel...sorry about the confusion
cheers
brendan
Dunno if this helps, but there was a publication that extensively detailed this conversion - published in the 80's by Graffiti pulbications. Yellow cover with a red XP coupe on the cover.
