build no's.

Does anyone know how many GXL's were made each year from '76 - '79 and what was the breakdown from 6's to 8's. I've seen build info on other models but not on these.

10 % were V8s, 3% were 5.8 towards 1980 in the XD range. I should imagine that the figures are not far out for the GXL.

I think the GXL 5.8 is the most forgoton and unloved Aussie muscle car. It was the last true Grand Touring car of the golden age. In many ways it was outstanding. It was powerful, luxurious and great for long distance.

I wish I still had my GXL. It was neptune blue with doe skin trim, power windows, 5.8. long range fuel tank and Air. My ex wraped it around a pole near the Mobil servo on the western highway heading from Werribee. It was pissing with rain and she floored it when entering the traffic. LSD in the wet and it was 360 time. Sigh.

Re: build no's.

Ive got two 5.8 GXL's, when I got my first one many years ago you used to see quiet a few getting around but there's not many left now. I think the percentage of V8's in XC's were higher than XD's.

Really only 10% V8s? I would have thought it was the other way around. I have seen many more V8s than 6s over the years. Maybe all the sixes died early or something.

You could be right. The 10% covers Falcons and Fairmonts as well as GXL. I should immagine the GXL would of been about 15% of sales as a guess and 50 to 60% would of been V8s. 75% of V8s would of been 302s in that model. This is a guess.

Re: build no's.

there used to be plenty of GXL's 4.1's getting around Sydney years ago but they were pretty pointless cars really. I've got a old Wheels road test of one, it did about 19 secs for the quarter and drank more than the 302. I'd say the majority were 302's but it would be good to know for sure.

Re: build no's.

One of my first cars was orange XC 302 GXL, people thought I was crazy for buying an orange car at that time, she was 2nd hand when I got her and had a fairly hard life, I think I paid about 3K it was around 1988/89. I remember the 1st thing I did was pull into the servo to fill her up only to be confused as to why I could not get the fuel cap open. After 5min of looking like a turkey I went inside and the old bloke behind the counter looked at me if I was from another planet when I explained my problem.....Oh to be young, dumb and full of you know what...lol... those were the days.
