Question Few questions regarding parts

hi all

Am preparing everything to get the coupe off the road (literally. its been sitting out the front of my house for the past two months) and strip it back in February and am collecting various rust repair and resto parts and getting the shed prepped. I just bought a NOS GS grille and so far have everything i need to get the car looking schmick except for two things. A decent set of tailights and surrounds and the chrome gutter moulds that go above the door. My first question is about the gutter moulds. Mine are completely rooted. bent, kinked, scratched, the works and am wondering if anybody else has had trouble finding a set and how much they paid for them. i havent managed to find a decent set yet except for a pair that just turned up for nearly $800. Does anybody else think this is a bit exhorbitant? I have also heard they can be straightened and rechromed...anybody had this done?

Second question is about the coupe front door pillar where the hinges bolt. ive come across a bloke selling a pair of pillars which are rust free. Theyre cuts from a car from a third the way up the windscreen pillar down to the bend in the stone tray area (am not familiar with the proper lingo here). Are these hard to come by or should i let them pass. and are the sedan pillars diff to the coupe ones? someone told me the coupes had a more angled windscreen....??

cheers

Daniel.

Re: Few questions regarding parts

there was a guy at our local swap meet a year or two ago that reconditioned chrome / stainless body moulds.

he had some examples on his table that looked pretty smick.

not sure , but i think he could even make one off new strips.

the bad part of this story is that i lost his card .i have looked for it ba few times for other people but ?????? no luck.

maybe he could be in parts peddler or restored cars magazine . or a letter to these might find him or someone simillar.

Re: Few questions regarding parts

The gutter moulds are stainless steel and are very hard and expensive to come by .
I bid on 5 pairs up to $500.00 and didn't win one set .It cost me $660.00 on e-bay to get some and the only reason they didn't go any higher is because time ran out .
The set on e-bay at the moment bid $780.00 or buy at $1200.00 is a bit high but not out of the question .I would wait as they do come up a least every 1-2 months .
As for the light lenses if its a XC you should be able to find and get them a desent price

The worst thing is I had realy good moulds on the car and just pulled them off thinking that they were nothing special you can buy them anywhere piece of steel that you could get in a roll and redo later boy was I wrong $660.00 used set sitting next to my old ones that were better before I got to them

Re: Few questions regarding parts

The tail light lenses and surrounds can be bought new repo from the gt places. the stainless trims are fixable, but very time consuming and therefore costly. It took my beater approx 1 day labour to fix my bonnet and eyebrow moulds, which were in fairly poor nick.
Good to see you are getting it happening..

Re: Few questions regarding parts

Coupes have a more acute angled windscreen to account for the lower roof height.

Dont know how badly you want them - but here on NZ Trademe there is a set for sale at the mo, they are XA however - pretty sure they are identical to XC though - they have been listed several times and I almost got them myself but decided not to.

They seem to be in good condition and are dirt cheep in comparison to the prices you have quoted - the guy had a buy now of $250NZ from memory and Im sure you could sort something out regarding freight.

May be worth a look - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...n-37756411.htm
Just had a look myself and found it - $240 buy now plus you get all other items relating to gutter trim - ie Fairmont/GT dogleg sections and straight sections that run across the top of the door panel and rear windows - both sides.

Cheers, Cheyne

Re: Few questions regarding parts

Thanks for that everyone. Sounds like those trims are hens teeth. that NZ site sounds good but theres no pics and i'm a bit worried about how much it will cost to send them here and what condition they'll arrive in...might go with the ones on eBay but i'll have to think it through first. Price is hideous however rare they are. are the repro tailights identical to the original ones? ive found theyre a bit lighter in colour.

Yeah its going to be a while before its up and running but i should have it stripped down to nothing by about April, depending on when i can get the car in the shed and start on it. i'll be taking photos along the whole way so i can have an album of the rebuild so will post as it goes.

Looked at a couple of new repo taillights the other day from rare spares. You're right, the colour of the lenses are definately lighter.I ended up passing them up and will try and find genuine ones.
