Re: Has anyone seen this XBGS Hardtop before.
I can't believe this.I saw a car that was nearly identical about a month ago in a bloke's garage. It was an orange 302 GS Fairmont and apart from the sunroof it was identical. The white half vinyl roof going over the boot lid,the white wheel arches and bonnet stripes and the quarter scoops were all there. He said it was his uncle's (I think) and he bought it new from Duhig Ford in Melbourne.
The car was a mess. The vinyl roof that made it so unique had destroyed it.The kid had started to pull the vinyl off and stopped when he saw what was under it.Basically everything that had been covered by the vinyl was gone. And to make matters worse his sister had taken the car for a spin and introduced the left hand quarter to a tree.Everything forward of the vinyl was still good though and the car was 100% complete.
I spent about 2 hours trying to decide whether it was worth buying and in the end I walked. In it's day it would have been an absolute stunner and I wish that I could have done something with it.
If his story was correct it seems that maybe Duhig Ford were doing a similar thing to McLeod Ford with their Horn Cars.I have a Fairmont coupe which was originally from Duhigs and the previous owner told me that it used to have a stripe going along the side and over the roof with a 302 decal in it.Some of the outline of it can still be seen on the car but he took it off. It's a shame that most of these cars have been butchered so much that no-one knows what an original one looks like anymore.
