They have been accepted by the Ford GT clubs, or so I have read. Check locally. But if they are accepted by these people, who are we to argue. Apart from that you are pushing to by an Austarlian GS V8 Fairmont for that sort of money. It sounds like the cheapest way to get a genuine GT. Just my 2 bobs worth.

Just looking for some opinions on South African GT's, im looking at buying one for around $22k.
Do they or will they have the appeal of the "aussie" cars.
Horses for courses, but they're not for me for a variety of reasons.
Firstly, it's the GT you buy because you can't afford the aussie GT. No shame there, but you will carry that mindset as long as you own the car. From day one you've settled for second best.... if you're honest with yourself.
Secondly, to satisfy the purists, and I guess to retain it's so called value, you can't modify it. Everybody wants original.
Lastly, everybody knows the Aussie GT and can relate to it. Only the true diehards can tell a fake from the real thing as it cruises down the highway. For this reason, to my line of thinking anyway, the SA GT will always look like a bitsa car and the average knob jockey in the street will think you have the mock up instead of the real deal.
If it was me, and I've owned 6 replicas and a genuine Phase II, I would spend the same amount of money on a really nice replica. This whole GT thing is a crock in my opinion.

Im with you on some of your comments, i still believe that at the end of the day it is a GT, all beit not an australian built car.
CAn i afford an aussie car yes, can i justify another $80k car to my wife no, can i drive a "GT" for under $30k yes.
In my mind i can justify buying one due to the fact that it IS not a FAKER by any means .

I don't think they will carry the same presence as the aussie gt .
If you are looking at the SA GT because you want a GT I don't think this would be the way to go .I agree with coupeman there are some nice replicas going for that price and I think the SA GT kinda fits in between GT and replica (closer to replica for me)
In saying all that I don't think getting one would be a bad thing .
What ever makes you happy and for 22k it would be worth a look

Well for a start they are an Aussie car. They were made here in Melbourne and shiped to Port Elizabeth in CKD form. Local South African content was mainly the interior that is more like that of a Futura. They are listed in the Australian Ford parts lists as 54H South Africa.
We moved to South Africa in 1970 and lived there for 6 years. My mates dad had a ZC or D Fairlane Custom 302, silver with red interior. He also had a blue XY "Ranchero" ute, also a 302. These were Aussie cars. There, if you bought a Fairlane 500 it came with the 351. Aussie cars were available up until 74 when the copped fuel embargos. That killed of the big bangers. Includes Holdens with Bow Tie badges. Also got Aussie Valiants but still with slant sixes long after we got Hemis.
I would own one. In fact I may just do that. I am thinking on it, real hard.

BTW if you want a real fast South African car you cant go past the Capri PARANA V8. That car had a fair bit of Aussie content to.

i have never realy looked into this.
if they are the same spec then it sounds like a good buy.
SA XWs only get 2V heads but they are still a 54H body. XYs are the same as Aussie cars except the wheels and trim. The tail lights are mounted upside down and badges are changed. Also guages are metric. They are called a "Fairmont GT".
