It seems GT Falcons have always been the popular one with thieves since even back in the Day!! There also seems to be no end to the bravado, desperation and cunning to their antic's.I once spoke to a New Car Salesman who was working for Bayford Motors Ford Dealership around 1971 when they were at High St Preston and he told me a guy pulled up in a New Mercedes and wanted to test drive a new XY GT Falcon. He told me that as they were busy and the guy looked honest,he asked the guy to give him his car key's and he could take an XY GT for a quick test drive on his own.The guy gave him the keys to his Mercedes and took off for a test drive alone insisting he will be back in ten minutes or so.After 15 Minutes or so they started to wonder where he was when he had'nt returned and not long after went out to see if he was coming. Not only had he not returned but the Mercedes he owned was also gone."STOLEN!!!"....The guy must have planned it all along and had a spare set of key's to his Merc' handy and waited till they were busy and pulled it off !!!
I was reading in an old Wheels mag that the cops were getting sick of chasing thieves who use GTHOS for getaway cars, sorry about the comparison but they were the WRX of their time.

Oh yeah, they'd handle better than the Rexie's. You could take corners at 150k's.
Driver also has alot to do with it.My Brothers Friend has an R1 Yamaha and he can't even keep up with my Brothers Stock Harley Davidson around corners as he is'nt such a skilled rider.
Rexies dont handle particularly well. There are major modifications required to turn them into a good handling car. Remember its based on the original Liberty floorpan. What they have going for them is four wheel drive grip. So they hang on in the corners due to grip, NOT handling. I read an article that explained it all. IMO they are a mechanial weiner. Fine to look under the bonnet of one if you know nothing about cars. Too me it looks, like an abortion under there. They sound crap too.
I have some more of these Stolen GT Stories and this one is also amazing.I went and looked at a Genuine XW GT Shell that I heard had been stolen and recovered and was for sale really cheap. When I got there and saw it,thats exactly what it was and nothing more. The thieves had taken everything of it and just left the panels inwich had all been kicked right in as was the roof. They also appear to have taken to it with a Crow Bar or something. They even took the headlining !! Numbers had been ground off and I.D. Tag was missing, but you could still see it was a Genuine Shell and the car had been immaculate prior to the theft.Police found it up in the Kinglake National Park somewhere and after seeing it ,I almost think they should have left it there.I asked the guy what happened ??Believe it or not , the guy told me that he worked Nightshift as a Security Guard and slept during the Day.While he was asleep , in broad Daylight ,thieves cut the Padlock on his driveway gate, somehow broke into his Shed and shut down the Alarm and successfully got out of there with his Genuine XW GT undetected or seen !!! The car was there,Gates and Shed locked when he went to bed in the morning after Daybreak, and when he awoke in the Afternoon, his driveway Gates were open as was his Shed and his XW GT had gone bye bye's!!!
