Here's a quick question. My XA GS has all the guages such as oil, temp, fuel, power running from left to right which seems very logical, but I have also seen many examples where some of the guages run from right to left. What's going on there? Why were some different?
my understanding is that early XA GT/GS had the gauges meeting in the middle, ie one was left to right, the other right to left. 73 XAs and XBs had them all going left to right

I have a 10/73 XA GS and it is just like stated above, gauges parked in the middle. XA's park in the middle, XB's park to one side. XA GT/GS dash is the same, XB GT/GS dash is the same. The XA dash surround is smooth while the XB surround is pebbled. Get a Ford parts manual and it will list the parts numbers.

Close. They changed at the end of XA. You could get either type in late XA GT/GS.
Thats right, somewhere around april to june 73 all the dash surrounds and guages were the XB type. I.E. wrinkle finnish dash, no 8k tachos and all guages above park to the left.
Guys, towards the end of the XAs some dashes had both the early XA and XB gauges in them. Usually XA on the left ( oil and volts) and XB on the right ( temp and fuel ) I've seen a few dashes like that over the years and they were factory. Actually I've got one sitting on a shelf as a spare, it's a smooth finish dash too.

10/73 was the end of the XA. There were XB's rolling off the line by that time so there were parts that got mixed. But, if you want to follow what Ford claimed was being built, the parts manuals list the difference as what has been stated. Like Paul said, wierd stuffed rolled down the line after the XB was introduced.
