I was out driving my GXL last night for the first time in about 6 months. Everywhere I went people were looking and smiling. It looks EXACTLY the same as it has for the past 18 years but now more people look then ever, I guess because they are getting rarer. Anyway I cant imagine anyone being so happy about seeing an XD or later model, ecept maybe for the current GT. There really wasnt anything in between worth getting excited about. Possibly an ESP but they were never really a head turner, with no more style then the average Fairlane of the day with poxy two-tone paint and even poxyer seat trim, and gold snowflakes, mmmmm. Lets see all the ESP owners bite now.
Hi my name is sort of sambersam, (not my real name) I have a rare model xc, its an allan moffet special. its most ovious feature is a signed australian flag on the fenders.
if your interested in this sort of thing e mail me at glenn_colwell@bigpond.com.au and i will send you photo type images plus info, i like xa through c and also have an xb gt.
A copper mate of my Dads used to pilot a pine lime XC "interceptor or candy car". And yep thats what the Vic police called them themselves. Some were 351's others were 302's and my Dads mate remembers they were all 4 speeds with 4wd, none had aircon and depending on the officer pwr steer was fitted after purchase by the police department. They all had bonnet scoops and depending on the geographic area some police stations would access their own budget to "hot up" their pursuit vehicle to catch the local hoons. Dads mate remebers the force spending over 3 gran on engine mods for his vehicle. Remeber this was 1977 and Dads mate is not one to talk crap. This was considered entirely in order as these were the days before police eye in the sky helicopters etc.
I got a ride in Dad mates candy car after pleading with him for days to take me for a spin, and yes to an impressionable 10 year old I still remember it as the fastest and coolest car ever. Guess what, I now own Dads mint XC pine lime GS that he bought brand new after our ride in his mates interceptor, and I still reckon its the coolest car ever.
I might be biased, but hell if you can get a chance at purchasing a retired interceptor, go for it. Individual state police records should tell you if that car was a government vehicle.
I know a guy who was a country cop in the south of WA and His highway cars XCs XD's Had 750 holleys, extractors and close ratio toploaders. The XCs had a tall (high speed 2.92s or 2:72 ish) 9 inch in them and the xds had abouta dozen BWs in them(aparently they didnt like it too much when you booted it and one wheel was on the asphalt and the other in the gravel). The Single rails were replaced with a toploaders after a few failings out on the highway. Aparenlty these could wind themselves off the 220kmh speedo as well. A set of rear treads would last about 2 weeks.
The good old days.

All XC manual 5.8's had the tramp rod on the left hand side only, why, Lord only knows.
Ford dropped the 9 inch diff for the Falcons/Fairmonts in September 78 and went to the 4 pinion 28 spline BW. Fairlanes/LTD's changed in December.
All XC 5.8 manuals had the close ratio single rail fitted as standard, still a piece of shit though.
A friend of mine has an original XD pusuit car. It has a black pillow block, tramp rods on both sides and has the orginal Carter thermoquad on it. Have been thinking baout buying it???
The Rally Pack was an option on the Falcon 500 models (sedan, coupe, ute and van) and as shown by JG33, the little black plate is attached to the raditaor support panel. There was no number differentiating them like the 34 - Fairmont & 32 for Fairmont GXL.

ps with respect to the tramp rods and 15 inch wheels on the P5's. I cannot for the life of me figure out why the P5's got these and the P6's got the 14 inch wheels and no tramp rods bearing in mind that the P6 hub cap was coppied from the 1974/5 Mercury Grand Marquis which used a 15 inch wheel. Lastly, the P5 ltd's were all fitted with the small port 2V heads, not the large port 4V heads.
I use to work at the police workshop here in Melbourne, and our department was in charge of all of the hwy pusuit or interceptors if you like. The would start out as a GS model from the factory and we would work from there. The extras where 4 into 1 headers autolite carby plus a little head work and a free flowing exhaust. 99% of all Vic cars where autos. All country cars got a front skid pan under the sump puls the long range tank and some even had front 1/4 vent windows. All had the vented bonnet. As for the tramb bars not many got them and any 4 speeds where singel rails. All had LSD's. I have a sh!t load of phots some where i will try and dig them out. Some of the more odd things we did was running copper exhaust's ( but found they gave of a nockous gas after a while) the wheels where factory steel with 7" rubber. Now i know some of you will tell me i am wrong but this is the stuff i worked on so i dont konw where you got your info. Big John
I never realy belived in those "Police Specials". Then, when I lived in Sydney in 81/2, the heads on my ZF Fairlane were stuffed and I called a guy who was starting a buisness in the Canterbury area, working out of his garage. I wont mention his name but he is now big in GT Falcon resto/parts in Sydney. Anyway, back to my story. He said he would have a set of good 2V heads, to come Saturday afternoon. In his garage was a new XD Falcon Police car, 5.8 S . The coppers were down the back of his garage. I bought the heads of that car, they were still warm when we loaded them up. The XD was just getting 4V heads, cam, intake, extractors etc. My mate asked the guy who was paying for all of that. His reply was that it was a cash deal and he asked no questions.
Go figure.
