I looking to buy an xc ute and want to know what to look for that could cost me some major $$$ in the future. What the some of the common problems and where does the rust usually occur?

Over the years I have found with the UTE`s rust & front end dramas are the most common appart from all the usial mechanical bits, engine gearbox etc.

Take a good look under the front make shure the radius rod brackets arnt all bent up, take a note of the position ou the inner lower camber pins and mack shure they are close to even & the car steers well. Also take a good look at the condition of the crossmember make shore that is has not taken a big hit & mover back, this can place the front end under a lot of stress & lead to cracks.
The best place to look at the under side of the vehicle is on a four post hoist because cracks can be missen if the weight of the car is not on the wheels.

Outer places the utes had faults were under the cover plate around the fuel tank and at the panel rear of the front seat, this would rust out if farmer joe was in the hadit of not fitting the tarp, carried a lot of pissing dogs or hay and this would make it`s way in & around the tank.

Rust in the front guards, rust on the inside of the guards where the A pillar attaches to the floor (behind the kick panel), rust under the fuel tank and in the corresponding place on the drivers side as mentioned above, these utes didnt have drain pipes that went through the body and if the holes under the front of the tray get blocked up the water just sloshes around in there.
Also check the doors for drooping and cracks around the locking mechanism
As with any ute have a good look at the bottoms of the rear quarter panels as these are prone to rusting out. Take off the inner panels and have a good look if you can.
Most country vehicles will have some degree of damage underneath. Have a look at a few and decide how much is too much.

I've found it easier to get the prospective purchase checked over by a panel beater mate... even if it costs a few $$$ or a case of beer. If you are after a tidy unit and a ute to enjoy, it is well worth it. Mechanically, they are fairly simple, and the more original, the better.
