Danny,

D1VE blocks were cast and used from 1971-1978 and were used for both the 429 and the 460.

Determining whether or not your engine is a 429 or 460 can be evaluated as noted above (crankshaft casting number).

More important (in your case) is discovering the casting numbers of the cylinder heads. They are located on the OUTSIDE of the cylinder head, along the valve cover mouting rail, and betweem the 3rd and 4th exahust port. This number could be something like: C9VE-A, or D0VE-C, or D0OE-R, or D3VE-A2A. Please find that casting number and tell us what it is.

Paul

Sorry to have to tell you this, but those are not Cobra Jet heads. They are the most common passenger car heads made for the 460.

Assuming original since factory, your engine was manufactured between 1973 and 1978, over which period the engine remains essentially unchanged.

Re: 429/460 Identification Needed

Hi Paul,
are those heads already equiped with hardened valve seats for use with unleaded fuel? If not, is there an easy way to check without taking the heads off?

Re: 429/460 Identification Needed

they came induction hardened from the factory, but the hardened part is very thin- if you need much of a valve job youll want to have your heads cut and hardened seats installed (exhaust only- intake isnt necessary)

Re: 429/460 Identification Needed

Hi there, Just wondering if anybody would hav a clue as to why my ford falcon au just dies. I have to disconnect the battery and reconnect it before it will start. My brake warning light comes on, If I have a brake problem will this stop the engine?. or prehaps my key is old and the engine immobiliser kicks in, any help would be apreciated. Thanks Karen
