Not sure of the cfm of that 1973 carb but I think it's around 600 cfm. It ought to fit the edelbrock single pane intake. If you can mix match parts and the engine runs fine then go ahead...unless there is an emmissions testing issue. Adjust timing/fuelmisture as needed (not likely a necessity in a bone stock applicaton, but check plugs for mixture).

I'm not a fan of the Autolite carbs...might want to try a Holly 600 or 750 cfm. Also, careful with the 1972 engines as they have a single year only cylinder head, the D2VE casting. It's an open chanmber head and can be detonation prone in performance applications. In a stock passenger car application you'll be okay but may need to run fuel with an octane rating better than today's regular fuel.

The 429 and the 460, on any given year of production, use all identical parts except for the cranksaft (stroke) and psitons (pin location). So other than the crank and pistons, all the parts are the same for any given year. Therefore, the external appearance leaves almost no clue for verifying engine displacment if the engine tag is gone. If your engine is installed, it's pretty hard to identify displacement except for maybe measure the stroke though a spark plug hole with a piece of straight wire.

Other ways to evaluate whether you have a 429 or 460:

One way is to flip the motor over and unbutton the pan. One of the crankshaft countrerweights has alphanumeric markings stamped on it's edge, and these markings identify whether it's a 429 or 460 crankshaft.

429 = 4U, 4UA or 4UAB

460 = 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB or 2YABC....or 3Y or 3YA.

Example:

Also, for quick identification of the crankshaft, you may look for the nodule or embossment between the first main journal and counterweight. The 460 is embossed there, while the 429 is not:

429

460

I think they are 3/8-course (3/8-16). I think they are 1-1/2 inches long. Any grade bolt will do (Grade 5 & up).
