460 crankshaft help

I am rebuilding a 79 460,D9TE-AB block, and got a reground crank from EPWI.The crankshaft I got is a 2YAB and has a lip about 1/2" tall between the last main bearing and the rear seal.It is in the wrong place to line up with the opening for it in the block and rear main cap.The old crank had the same lip,but in the correct place.I have another 460 crank that has the lip machined off.Can anyone tell me what's going on?Did I get the wrong year crankshaft from EPWI?What year do I need,a 79?Cheers and thanks for any help,Bill

cool Re: 460 crankshaft help

Bill,
  • The 1968-1978 429/460 engines are internally balanced. The 1968-1978 internally balanced engines use crankshafts that are marked as 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB, or 2YABC.
  • The 1979 and later 460 engines are externally balanced. The 1979-up externally balanced 460 engines all used D9TE-AB cylinder blocks. The 1979 and later externally balanced engines use crankshafts that are marked as 3Y, 3YA, or 3YAB.
Clearly, you are trying to install an internal balance 2YAB crank into an external balance applicable D9TE-AB block which accepts only 3Y series crankshafts.

Exchange the crankshaft for a 3Y series 1979 and later crank.

Paul

All 429/460 engines use a damper (harmonic balancer) that is zero balanced. So the dampers are interchangable regardless of whether the engine is internally or externally balanced.

The externally balanced 460 engines use a sleeve that has the hatchet weight, and a flex plate that has a balance weight.
